ISLAND PARK — Harriman State Park's first ever Feathers ‘n’ Fins Skiathon drew 50 skiers from Idaho, Montana and Utah Saturday, Feb. 28. Participants skied on the park’s groomed trails with either the skating or diagonal technique.

The largest group of participants was men racing the 10k course, followed by young people ages 16 and under and men racing 20 km. The youngest participant was six-year-old Lola Lang from Pocatello and the oldest was West Yellowstone’s Thor Godar, 62. Anne and Robert Timpany of Rigby pulled their baby in a sled; Robert placed third and Anne second in the 7km.

Organizer, Jodi Vincent, the park’s assistant manager, said, “A big thank-you to Idaho Falls Nordic Ski Patrol for sponsoring medals and providing support on the trails, to the Island Park Area Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring Idaho Liquid Sound (music for the event), to TroutHunter Lodge for providing prizes and coupons to its restaurant for the After Event gathering, and to Harriman State Park for providing many nice prizes and hosting the event.”

Vincent also thanked volunteers who took photos, ran registration and timed the races.

“A huge thank-you to Mother Nature for providing exceptional weather, and to the Harriman’s and John Muir for providing influence and the donation of the Harriman Wildlife Refuge,” she added. “Feathers ‘n’ Fins wants to recognize the importance of natural spaces and to encourage a greater appreciation of mother nature. As John Muir said, ‘When one tugs at a single thing in nature he finds it connected to the rest of the world.’”
