Sandhill cranes in flight by PEGGY HAMLEN

TETON VALLEY, ID. — Greater sandhill cranes that spent the spring and summer raising their young in the northern Rockies will soon migrate to wintering grounds in warmer climates. The Teton Regional Land Trust will celebrate this annual event with a presentation, “The History and Habits of Sandhill Cranes,” at 5:30 p. m. Friday, September 18 at the Senior Center in Driggs City Hall, 60 South Main Street.

After the presentation, attendees will travel to one of several viewing sites in the area.

Sandhill cranes that migrate through the Teton Valley are part of the Rocky Mountain population. The valley is one of the largest pre-migration staging grounds for this population. They gather here by the thousands, feeding in cut barley fields during the day and roosting in protected wetlands at night. At dusk they fly from the grain fields to the roosting areas, creating an extraordinary display of sound and sight. This event will highlight that transition by providing attendees the opportunity to view the spectacle close up.
